Candle shapes need structure beside them
A pin bar at the wrong place is noise. Students often arrive able to recite candle names yet still treat every long lower wick as a buy cue. Chart reading improves when the candle is read against the swing that framed it.
Place before pattern
Ask where the candle sits: mid-range, at a defended swing, or into unused space. A rejection wick at a previously respected EURUSD daily low carries more weight than the same shape drifting through the middle of a week-long congestion.
Session colours the close
Australian traders watching the London open see candles print with different urgency than the overnight range. The same engulfing pattern after a thin Asian session can mean little more than the first burst of liquidity — not a finished story.
Practice aloud
In workshops we ask students to describe a candle without using its textbook nickname first. “Close back inside yesterday’s range after probing below the swing” beats “hammer” when you are building judgement. Mentorship then ties that sentence to the student’s own pairs and hours.
